About this recording
Bradley University - The Symphonic Winds & High School Honor Band April 27, 2004 - Dingeldine Music Center, Peters Recital Hall Director: Dr. David Vroman - Guest conductor: Steven D. Davis Tracks 1-4: Symphonic Winds. Tracks 5-8: High School Honor Band. Track names were taken from the disc label (cover.jpg). The label prints "Könisgsmarsch"; the piece is Strauss's Königsmarsch. 7-8 are two movements of Holst's First Suite in E-flat (Chaconne, March). Backed up 2026-10-02 from a degrading disc. 8 tracks, 47:00. The drive silently conceals damaged audio and also returns some reads shifted by a few to a few hundred samples (jitter), worse toward the outer edge of the disc (the end of the CD). Tracks 1-6: every track was read raw 5 times (GNU ddrescue) and every sample is the median of the 5 reads. Sectors where the 5 reads were not all identical / with no 3-of-5 identical majority: t1 1.28% / 0.14%, t2 0.08% / 0.00%, t3 0.53% / 0.04%, t4 1.52% / 0.29%, t5 0.69% / 0.08%, t6 2.45% / 1.32%. These are essentially clean. Track 7 (Chaconne, 4:22) - the damaged one: 0:00-1:35 is clean. From about 1:40 on, every read is jittered. 7 reads were aligned against each other, and each sector uses the median of the largest group of reads that agree on alignment. KNOWN LOSS: 29 sectors (0.39 s) could not be read at all and are silence: 53 ms at 3:43.1 and 333 ms at 4:04.6. Single read only (re-reading there stalled the drive for minutes per sector): 3:41.1-3:44.9 and 4:03.4-4:08.3. Only 2 reads agreed (about 5 s in total): around 2:16-2:21, 2:40-2:43, 3:03-3:07, 3:19-3:21. Reads disagree noticeably (about 6 s in total): mostly 2:16-2:22, 2:40-2:47, 3:59-4:03. Expect possible clicks, dropouts or small skips in 2:15-4:10, especially at the times above. Track 8 (March, 3:20): read 15 times; it has concealment noise but little jitter, so it came out well. 0:50.1-0:52.5 is a single read (bad spot on the first pass, later recovered; re-reading there stalled the drive). Under 1 s in total has noticeable disagreement, mostly 0:47-0:50. raw-reads/ keeps every raw read of tracks 7 and 8 (s16le stereo 44.1 kHz PCM, one file per pass), the ddrescue mapfiles and the scripts used, so a better merge can be attempted later without the disc. The scripts hardcode the working folder they were run from (change R = ... at the top).
